The Lewis Clark Valley is considered part of the new frontier of wine-growing areas in the United States, but the region actually has a long wine history. Grapes were introduced into the Clearwater Valley by 1872 and thanks to the pioneering efforts of two Frenchmen, Louis Desol and Robert Schleicher, and one German immigrant, Jacob Schaefer, the region rapidly became known for its wines. Schleicher was most successful, taking a number of gold medals for his wines at expositions in Omaha, Buffalo, St. Louis and Portland.

Today, local wineries are winning their own medals for varietals made from local and regional grapes.
